Jack Wayt Passing

Tough news to report and confirm :
Former major PSS player, Jack Wayt, passed away on Tuesday, February 1st, 2022. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s/dementia a few years back and that condition had deteriorated over the last couple years. He recently suffered a ruptured colon and although that surgery was successful, as is the case with many dementia patients, he did not do well in recovery. Never really regaining awareness. He passed away two weeks later. His wife, Kathryn, is doing well, as there was time to prepare and knowing Jack’s health directives, Jack also has a daughter living in Prescott. Kathy has no plans for a service at this time but fully okayed the news being spread to those of us in PSS who knew Jack. A good man!

Cactus League to Start March 1

Cactus League games will begin Monday, March 1, and continue through mid-April when our regular Summer Season is scheduled to start. Rosters and schedules have been created by the division coordinators and are (or soon will be) posted on the Prescott Senior Softball website.

Since the Cactus games are intended to (1) help players showcase themselves, and (2) help managers evaluate players prior to the Summer Season drafts, players should play Cactus ball in the division in which they hope to be drafted for the summer. If you find yourself on an inappropriate Cactus roster, contact the division coordinators or one of the following — Doug Randall, Mark Adams, Jim Fisher or Dan Sullivan — to switch to the proper division.

The ‘Major’ Division draft will take place on Thursday, April 8; the ‘AAA’ Division on Monday, April 12; and the ‘AA’ Division on Thursday, April 15. All three divisions will begin summer season play on Monday, April 19.

Participation in the ‘Major’ and ‘AAA’ divisions is competitive.
Managers draft players based on their perceptions of the players’ (1) playing ability, (2) dependability and (3) compatibility. If, based on those perceptions, a player who stands for the ‘Major’ Division draft is not drafted onto a ‘Major’ Division team, that player will be entered in the ‘AAA’ Division draft. Similarly, a player not drafted onto a ‘AAA’ Division team will be entered in the ‘AA’ Division draft. Every player entered in the ‘AA’ Division draft will be selected for a ‘AA’ Division team.

If, following all drafts, a player who chooses not to play for the drafting team (or in that team’s division) will be deemed to have resigned from PSS. It is therefore very important that players play Cactus games in the division which is most appropriate for them. Please bear this in mind when signing up for Cactus play.

Thank you.

Softball Resumes

The fields at Pioneer Park will re-open in less than two weeks, and Prescott Senior Softball will return with batting practice and pick-up games on Mondays and Thursdays beginning Monday, January 18 at 10:00 AM. Please do not go on the fields until any frost on the outfield grass has fully melted away.

Any cancellations or postponements for the weather (or other reasons) will be announced via e-mail, so please be sure that PSS has an accurate e-mail address for you. Check your messages before leaving for the fields if you think a day’s games might be called.

Everyone who registered and paid to play last year is already registered and paid for 2021. New players and members who opted out last year and requested a refund must register and pay to play this year. Click to register.

Cactus League play is expected to begin around March 1, with the regular summer season to follow in mid-April. Obviously, weather and/or politics may alter these expectations.

Our 2020 season was successful in no small part because we managed to avoid any COVID-related disruptions. This was due largely to the responsible behavior of our players in maintaining proper distancing, avoiding gathering in groups, and staying home when feeling even slightly ill — “symptomatic”, if you will.

It is important that we remain conscientious in these matters to avoid an “outbreak” within PSS. Anyone who cannot or will not cooperate will be asked to leave.

Thank you.
